Frequently Asked Questions
Are your materials DFARS and BABA compliant?
Yes. Electro-Core’s silicon steel is sourced and processed domestically, meeting DFARS Specialty Metals compliance requirements for defense applications and Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) requirements for federally funded infrastructure projects. Contact us if you need compliance documentation for a specific contract or project.
What types of silicon steel cores do you manufacture?
We manufacture toroidal wound cores, rectangular wound cores, single and three-phase C-cores, distributed gap cores, gapped cores, and stepped cross-section cores. We also produce cut-to-length laminations and hole-punch laminations.
Can you handle custom or non-standard core configurations?
Yes. Custom work is a core part of what we do. Our engineering team works directly with customers to provide solutions for non-standard sizes and geometries, backed by in-house tooling and slitting capabilities that other suppliers may not have.
What materials do you work with?
We typically work with grain-oriented (GOES) and non-oriented (NOES) electrical steel, but are expanding into other materials. We stock the most common gauges from 0.002” to 0.025”.
What is your typical lead time?
Lead times vary by order size, material availability, and complexity. Because we stock a wide range of silicon steels and maintain in-house slitting and tooling, we are often able to turn around both standard and custom orders faster than suppliers who depend on outside vendors, and we have the flexibility to expedite orders when needed.
What frequency and performance ranges can your cores support?
Our silicon steel cores have been used in applications spanning frequencies from DC to 100 kHz. Most published magnetic test data covers power applications in the 50 Hz to 1 kHz range; for special applications, our in-house testing facilities can provide performance data specific to your requirements.
What finishing and processing options do you offer?
We offer a full range of in-house processing, including annealing, bonding (varnish impregnation and edge bonding), gapping, lapping, etching, epoxy coating, and machining. Our epoxy coating uses 3M #260 electrical resin and carries UL Recognition (#E34-947M) for 130°C operation.
Can you supply raw silicon steel without a finished core?
Yes, in limited quantities. We can supply silicon steel below typical mill minimums to steel service centers and other buyers who need smaller quantities than standard mill orders allow.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No. We accommodate orders of any size and volume, from one-off projects to large-scale reordering arrangements for ongoing production needs.
Are your products made in the United States?
Yes. Electro-Core has manufactured silicon steel cores in the U.S. since 1967. All production takes place at our Midwest facilities.
